Calculate wind loads according to ÖNORM B 1991-1-4 (Austria)

In Austria, wind loads are governed by ÖNORM EN 1991-1-4 with the national provisions of ÖNORM B 1991-1-4. Unlike Germany there are no large-scale wind zones: the basic wind velocity and basic velocity pressure are specified individually for each municipality.

LoCaStatik stores these values for all Austrian municipalities and uses them to calculate the wind loads on walls, roofs and structural elements.

What ÖNORM B 1991-1-4 regulates

Basic values per municipality

ÖNORM B 1991-1-4 specifies the basic wind velocity and basic velocity pressure for each municipality – from the sheltered Alpine foreland to exposed locations.

Terrain categories

The roughness of the terrain determines the peak velocity pressure as a function of height above ground.

Pressure and force coefficients

For walls, flat, monopitch, duopitch, troughed, sawtooth, hipped, vaulted and domed roofs as well as free-standing walls, signboards, flags and lattice structures.

Solar panels

Wind loads on photovoltaic and solar installations on flat and pitched roofs according to the Austrian provisions.

Dynamic effects

The structural factor cscd accounts for gust effects and resonance in slender or tall structures.

How it works with LoCaStatik

  1. Enter address Select the site by address. Zone, basic values and altitude are determined automatically.
  2. Select structural element Select the roof shape or structural element and enter the geometry. The project's standard determines the coefficients.
  3. Download report Export the results with all intermediate steps and references to the standard as a PDF for the structural analysis.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the basic wind values for my municipality come from?

From the tables of ÖNORM B 1991-1-4. LoCaStatik determines the municipality from the address and adopts the basic values automatically. They are stated in the report and can be viewed in the location tool.

Are there dedicated modules for solar installations?

Yes, LoCaStatik offers modules for solar panels on flat and pitched roofs according to the Austrian provisions.

How does the calculation differ from the German one?

The Eurocode structure is the same, but the national annexes differ in basic values, terrain categories and individual coefficients. In LoCaStatik you select the standard per project and the calculation then consistently follows the Austrian or German provisions.
